This Weekend: Upcoming & Ongoing
When we designed Spotobe, we tried to fix little problems that annoyed us with other events and entertainment websites. One thing that we thought about long and hard was how to handle events like exhibits. They take place every day, and if you had to wade through two pages of them every day just to find anything else, you'd probably want to smack us. To keep that from happening (nobody likes being smacked), we split our events calendar into upcoming and ongoing events sections.
Problem solved, right? Well, yes and no. Now our upcoming events calendar is nice and clean and easy to use, but I worry that all of the great exhibits we have around here tend to get overlooked. This weekend might be a good time to check one out, so if you haven't been keeping up with ongoing events, I'm providing a crash course. I'll even throw a few other weekend suggestions in along the way.
The Whitaker Center’s much talked-about exhibit “Our Body: The Universe Within” has been extended, and will keep rolling until Nov. 2. I still haven’t made it over to see it, and I’d be interested in knowing what anyone who has thought about it. If you are more interested in car bodies than the human body, the Antique Auto Club of America Museum has two exhibits right now. One is a a vintage motorcycle show and one is collection of Studebakers. If you are into slightly older history, “News From Hell — Newspapers and Reporting the Civil War” just opened at the National Civil War Museum. If that sounds like something you might like, then this is a great weekend for you, because there is also a re-creation of a Confederate Artillery Company camping out at the museum on Saturday and Sunday, and The Market at Washingtonburg, a re-creation of a colonial town and market, will be open all weekend at the Army Heritage Museum in Carlisle.
Back to the ongoing stuff. On the art front, the Art Association of Harrisburg’s fall member exhibition “The Square” runs through October 9. In addition to its usual collection in the DOSHI gallery, the Susquehanna Art Museum has an exhibition of photographs by Rachel Blaser called “Phase Transitions.” Blaser is fascinated by water in all of its forms, and her photographs are stunning. If you are looking for something a bit more offbeat, Messiah College has a collection of work by bead artist Gail Gorlitzz.
A few other weekend notes. Messiah also has Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in their on-campus movie theater five times this weekend. If you missed it the first time around, it might be worth checking out. Also, Tara Station is turning one, and they are throwing themselves an 80’s themed birthday party. If I wasn’t going to be in Happy Valley, I would go dressed as the lead singer of The Outfield. A rat tail and some dangly cross earrings and I’m there. Finally, Sunday is Fort Hunter Day, and it is really the first of a ton of fall festivals and events that you can find on Spotobe’s calendar. There’s a lot coming down the pike. Have fun kids.

Darn! No comments yet.
You know it's really sad when people ignore each other and right now I feel really ignored. Would you like to help start a conversation now?
