This Weekend: Thinking of Winter

Ever noticed that some bands just sound better in the summer than they do in the winter? I'd say most jam bands fall into this category. Also Tom Petty. Listening to American Girl or Running Down a Dream just isn't as fun if you aren't driving down the highway with all four windows in the car the whole way down.

This isn't only true of summer. There are certain acts that just sound better when it's cold outside. Two of them, Missy Higgins and Joshua Radin will be playing a show at the Whitaker Center on Saturday night. Maybe not everybody thinks this way. Does anyone else get the urge to listen to Keane every time it rains? Anyway, the pair is coming to town at the perfect time, because walking across the Walnut Street Bridge this morning would have been much more comfortable if I had been wearing a jacket.

Beyond the concert, this weekend is jam-packed with so much interesting stuff that I’m only going to be able to mention a small portion of it here. Seriously, check out the site and see everything else. Since October just began, on Friday you have First Friday Celebrations in Lancaster, Lebanon and New Cumberland. On the art front, Progressive Galleries is also opening a new space in Midtown, and they are kicking it off with an opening reception. Also on Friday, the Whitaker Center has rocker Martin Sexton. I haven’t listened to enough of his music to tell you the ideal weather for enjoying it. Sorry.

Saturday, is the Little Buffalo Festival at Little Buffalo State Park. I have fond memories of going to this as a child (I saw Arlo Guthrie there actually) and it’s good to see that it’s still hanging on despite all the problems they have had with weather in the past. Saturday is also the Fifth Annual Soup Cook-Off at the Hershey Volunteer Fire Company. Nothing better than a nice hot cup of soup when the weather starts to get cool. There are also family-friendly fall celebrations at Ashcombe and Stauffers of Kissel Hill. If you often sit around and yearn for the halcyon days of the 70’s, there is also a Disco Event in support of Hospice in New Cumberland.

Sunday, the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra opens another season of its Masterworks Series. They actually have a concert Saturday night as well. Harvest Days at Kings Gap is also on Sunday, and from the description it seems like it would be a lot of fun. As for me? No idea this weekend. Have fun kids.

Darn! No comments yet.

  1. You know it's really sad when people ignore each other and right now I feel really ignored. Would you like to help start a conversation now?

Do you have something to add?
