This Weekend: Spotobe at Foundry Day

The main reason that Spotobe will be at Foundry Day in Boiling Springs this weekend is quite simple: It’s really close to my house. I’m in the process of looking for an apartment closer to Harrisburg, but since returning from Philadelphia, I’ve been living back where it all started for me. My current residence is nine holes of golf away from downtown Boiling Springs, and that makes traveling to said event quite convenient.

But if I’m going to be honest, I have to admit that even if I didn’t live in Boiling Springs, even if I still lived in Philadelphia and didn’t help run an events and entertainment website, I still would have come home for Foundry Day.

Not too many people know that Boiling Springs even exists. Those that do generally only know enough to poke fun at Boiling Springs High School alumni for being “Bubblers.” Nevertheless, I liked growing up in there. Honestly, no matter how many people in my past have made fun of me for being from the sticks (even though its actually the suburbs), I never felt the need to defend my hometown (well, I guess I just did — that was the first time though). Those of you who have been there know that Boiling Springs is actually a beautiful place. At the right moment — a snowstorm, Christmas Eve, certain summer evenings — it can be absolutely breathtaking.

I think that’s why I have always liked Foundry Day. There are hundreds of arts and crafts fairs just like it in Pennsylvania every summer. But to me, Foundry Day was always a day that Boiling Springs was at its best. People from all over the area would come to my little town and walk around the lake and talk about how pretty it was. Every year, it made me proud to be from Boiling Springs, and when the day was spoiled by rain, I was always legitimately upset.

Even though there is absolutely no chance of me buying anything other than food tomorrow, Foundry Day is important to me. I think every community needs days like that. Alright, enough annoying sentimentality, on to the weekend.

Friday night is a huge night on City Island. Both the Senators and the City Islanders are at home, and there’s gonna be fireworks. Also on Friday night, oddly-named indie rocker Nathanial Hoho will be at Suba Tapas Bar. His songs get stuck in my head, which is not something I can say about too many local musicians.

On Saturday, Hershey Gardens is hosting A Day of Wine and Roses, which looks like it would be very fun if a bit emasculating (maybe you renaissance men don’t feel the same way). Appalachian Brewing Company has three bands Saturday night, and if you like Coldplay, Quickstep John and Farewell Flight should be right up your alley.

Sunday’s got more wine and more roses, and the Tour de Belt. Make sure you’re properly hydrated before attending either. You’ve also got Love’s Labour’s Lost Friday and Saturday, but I think we’ve talked about that enough already. Like I said, I’ll be at Foundry Day on Saturday, so come see why it makes me so happy. On Sunday I’ll probably be sitting inside enjoying Euro 2008. In the absence of my boys from Britain, I’ll be pulling for… ¡La Furia Roja!

Have fun, kids.
