This Weekend: Smashing Pumpkins

For me, this weekend is all about pumpkins. Hopefully you know by now that Spotobe will be at the Pennsboro Pumpkin Fest all weekend, and hopefully you are all planning to stop by and say hello. Putting together the contest has been fun, but last night I didn't even realize how absurd I looked pushing a shopping cart of 13 pumpkins around Giant until I noticed all of the funny looks that I was getting. I think I need a little bit of a break from pumpkins.

If you’re looking for weekend entertainment—pumpkin-related or otherwise, here’s a rundown. Friday night, David Crosby and Graham Nash will be at the Luhrs Center in Shippensburg. That’s the C and the N from CSNY, for those of you not versed in classic rock lore. I challenge you to find four guys who have had a more tumultuous history than those four. Speaking of tumult, Open Stage of Harrisburg is currently putting on Around the World in 80 Days and there are performances Friday and Saturday. Now Phineas Fogg? That’s a guy who’s been through even more than David Crosby.

On Saturday, the Pennsylvania National Horse Show swings into gear at the Farm Show Complex. It runs the whole way to the 18th. You also could check out the Harvest Bluegrass Festival, Pig Roast & Grape Stomping at Moon Dancer Winery. It looks like a really good time and, unfortunately, it’s the second festival in a row they’ve had on days I had other plans. How dare they? I also have three very different, but equally good musical suggestions for Saturday night. Spotobe’s friends Lakeherst, a Philadelphia-based emo softcore act will be at Gullifty’s, hip hop icon KRS-One will be at Dragonfly and virtuoso string ensemble The Dædalus Quartet will be at Market Square Presbyterian Church.

Sunday, Susquehanna Outfitters is leading a fall foliage canoe trip on the Susquehanna River. If you’d rather look at the leaves on solid ground, the Boyd Big Tree Conservation Area is offering an Autumn Forest Walk. As for me, I’ll be at Pumpkin Fest all weekend, and then I’ll climb into my pumpkin carriage and go home to sleep on a bed of pumpkins. Not really. Have fun, kids.

"It's pretty depressing when people are so short-sighted that they immediately change their mind about something being "good" or not based on something like religion. As a member of a band (who has played shows with Farewell Flight and find that they are awesome dudes on and off stage, regardless of anything related to religion or any other personal convictions of theirs), I'm glad when I talk to people who seem to have some sort of depth or substance. A small but usually accurate indicator of this can be whether or not they hold opinions like the one Sam has voiced. A lot of bands find it sort of comforting that their fans aren't hipsters, bigots, or just overtly judgmental people in general. It's good that people like Sam find out that bands they like are Christians or so- five-minutes-ago or whatever it is that these people choose to hate at the moment so they can turn on them and talk shit about them because of factors that are completely irrelevant to the way the songs vibrate in his ears. I hope that Sam isn't older than maybe 16 or so, because that would be pretty sad. "I'm with Jim on Pizza Grille. I've been there twice for lunch, ordered salads both times. While the ingredients were fresh and the service was sufficient, I didn't find the food to be memorable or inspired. "You make an excellent point. And let me get it out there that I love Pierce Brosnan. I think he is the smoothest human being alive, and he did have a few scripts that were absolute clunkers. The last one especially. "The whole time I was watching this, I kept forgetting that Craig is supposed to be Bond. He's an incredible actor, but just doesn't have the look. He's definitely physical, but I kept thinking during the Tosca scene that he doesn't have Connery's etiquette to fit into that social arena. Another note--while I don't think Brosnan is the actor Craig is, I don't think the critics give Brosnan credit for dealing with less-than-stellar scripts. He also didn't have the opportunity to recreate the character from scratch. Personally, I'm hoping Ioan Gruffudd grows into the role a few pictures from now and is able to recreate Craig's intensity.
