The Jellybricks: Goodnight to Everyone

Another rainy Friday. Looking for a little lift I decided to spring for the new Jellybricks album, "Goodnight to Everyone." The Harrisburg power pop standards have been making upbeat music since they hit the scene in 1997 with their album "Kinky Boot Beast." "Goodnight to Everyone" is their first release since 2004, and it was anxiously awaited by local music fans and power pop aficionados alike.

The album cover (pictured) is pretty sweet. Makes me long for the days when I bought CD's instead of digital albums. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that the music lives up to the cover. "Goodnight to Everyone" isn't bad, it's just not my favorite album by the Bricks.

On their last album, “Power This,” The Jellybricks found a sugary, British Invasion sound that played to their strengths and conveyed the energy of their live performances. Intentionally or not, they moved away from that sound a bit on “Goodnight to Everyone” and the album suffers for it.

Again, it’s not as though the songs on the album are bad, they just aren’t as interesting as songs like “Simple Me” or “All Fired Up” off of “Power This.” A second listen helped me appreciate songs like “Ruin Us” and “Try to Be” more than I had on my first time through the album, but as a whole, “Goodnight to Everyone” feels a little bit scattered. If I were having a party, I feel like I could throw it on in the background. It’s fun and it might keep people bobbing their head, but I’m not sure that it’s particularly memorable.

With that said, if you haven’t seen the Jellybricks live, make sure you do next time you have a chance. They’ll be playing at the Pennsboro Pumpkin Fest on October 12 (we’ll be there too! details soon). If you like Rooney or Fountains of Wayne, you’d like the Bricks. You’d also like “Power This”, which needs to be on your iPod. It’s available on iTunes and the whole album is very, very strong. Have a great weekend everybody.

Darn! No comments yet.

  1. You know it's really sad when people ignore each other and right now I feel really ignored. Would you like to help start a conversation now?

Do you have something to add?
