Simply Turkey on Sabbatical

The Spotobe office is downtown, so we are fortunate to have a wide variety of lunch spots within a short jaunt. When we get a group together, we often go to Strawberry Square, where there is something to accommodate everyone, even my "I feel like a milkshake and Auntie Anne's pretzel bites" days. Many people here are fond of Taco Factory, plus you have the fast food options. Our other favorite has been Simply Turkey & More (bad name, but yummy soups, salads & sandwiches), which is on the lower level near the Market Street entrance.

Make that WAS by the Market Street entrance. Last week, I was all fired up for the Cream of Crab soup I scoped out on their website, so I gathered up my peeps here and trudged through the midday humidity, only to find the security bars locked down and nary a fresh loaf of bread in sight. I was incensed. I mean, who shutters up a popular place without any warning or a sign of some sort? Finally, we found one little 8.5” x 11” sign that simply said something like, “Closed until late July. Reopening upstairs.” Okay, well, how about updating the website so those of us online-savvy customers have a way of knowing what’s going on? I’m sure the owners are thinking, “Hey, shut up and be happy we are going to be open upstairs. We’re the ones losing money here, since it was not our idea to move this joint.” Right. I’ll be happy when it’s open again and I can get my soup fix. In the meantime, I accidentally found the BEST Cream of Crab with Asparagus soup at Spice. Seriously, fan-freakin-tastic stuff. Sit down and enjoy some or belly up to the bar like I did and get it to-go in about 3 minutes flat from the bartender. A cup is only $4 and a bowl is $6 (plus tax and tip). It’s rich, with slightly crunchy fresh asparagus and just the right amount of salt. Sheer culinary perfection, available everyday, my friends. In fact, I’m going to have to get a bowl tomorrow so I can take a picture to post here. Yup, that’s my excuse.

I believe that whole portion of Strawberry Square is going to get torn out to make room for an entrance to Harrisburg University's new building.

Ugh - that sux - I understand the need for an entrance to the University - but what about all of the numerous employers & employees which MADE this section of the city as busy as it is today....We all LOVE simply turkey - as it is one of the very few healthier options available for lunch around here for those of us who only get a half an hour for lunch....I also heard that there may be a McDonalds going in upstairs in Strawberry Square - if that IS the case - that would be such a sellout by HDC....I am NOT impressed.....

Had another excellent bowl of Cream of Crab soup recently at The Firehouse. My colleague had a calamari/steak salad and I could not believe how generous the portion was. Calamari was very tender, too. I think the soup was a special, not a daily item, so call first if you're craving.

Do you have something to add?
