Did We Mention The Restroom…

Spotobe big boss (well, bigger than me boss) Dori P. hit El Sol recently and filed this rather interesting report with the Spotoblog (if my title is “editor” I’m going to talk like one damn it).

I can assure you, this is not a subject with which I have any experience. In fact, just thinking about changing diapers period makes me break out into cold sweats, let alone thinking about doing it in public. Nevertheless, without further ado:

“Generally when writing about a restaurant, one would extol or lament the quality of the food, service or overall dining experience. But sometimes, something takes you quite by surprise, and you feel compelled to share this observation with other kindred spirits who may rejoice in the knowledge. In this case, New Moms.

Ladies, have you, like me, taken your infant or young toddler to eat at a “family place” and found yourself in a tiny, dirty, cramped bathroom with no possible place to change a diaper? I’m sure you have. It’s happened to me in many places with prominent kids’ menus. So, imagine my surprise when I waltzed (sans infants) into the ladies loo at El Sol on Third Street and found a large, open space with an actual changing table, complete with a waterproof pad, baby lotion & powder and little plastic bags!

My jaw just about dropped to the immaculate floor. I looked around in awe. The toilet was sparkling clean, the fixtures all looked brand new and the hands-free paper towel dispenser had already presented a sheet for my convenience. I was in restaurant restroom nirvana. (This makes me realize how different my life is from my early 30s in NYC when such a post would have highlighted Bar 89’s unsettling — but remarkably private — glass doors. Sigh.)

I did want to mention that our table very much enjoyed a delicious Salsa Sampler, comprised of excellent chunky guacamole, tasty salsa, fresh pico and traditional refried beans with warm, homemade chips. We also enjoyed Chicken Taco Salads with chipotle ranch dressing and a trio of Tacos: grilled fish, carne asada and chorizo. Everyone was very satisfied with the meal and the service. But did I mention the restroom...”

Knowing they have a large, clean changing table is reason enough to get me to El Sol! It's pathetic that an adequate changing table -- something so necessary and easy to do well -- is so rare among "family" restaurants that the presence of one is notable.

Do you have something to add?
