Dog Day Afternoon
Friday, August 7, 2009 10:00AM
The Fall Keystone Cluster Dog Show starts today at the Farm Show Complex, and in honor, I figured I'd re-post the photos I took when my then-fiancee and I went to the spring show. Make fun if you want, but honestly, we had a really good time.
Like I said at the time, if you're considering buying a dog, you should really go to the show. It's a great opportunity to see dogs of every different breed and decide what kind is right for you. Most of the owners and handlers are very friendly and more than happy to answer your questions. You're more likely to have a problem getting stuck with someone who is a bit too happy to talk about their dogs. At length.
You can check out the photos from the spring show on FLICKR or FACEBOOK. Full Article » -
Saturday Afternoon at Hershey Gardens
Monday, July 27, 2009 9:22AM
One of the crummy things about living in an apartment is a lack of outdoor space. Saturday was a hot one, but summer is supposed to be hot, and sitting inside just wasn't an option. So Meg and I took a trip to Hershey Gardens and spent two very enjoyable hours walking the grounds. Full Article » -

Senators Preview: Opening Night
Friday, April 17, 2009 9:39AM
Meg and I headed to the newly-renovated Metro Bank Park last night to catch the first home game of the Senators 2009 season. They ended up beating the Reading Phillies 7-2, which gave me mixed feelings. I plan on going to plenty of baseball games on City Island this summer, so I'd like the Senators to be competitive. At the same time, I'm a rabid Phillies fan, and I would have liked to have seen a little bit more out of Reading pitcher and former first round pick Joe Savery, who didn't pitch all that well for Reading. Either way, that's immaterial, what's more important are the improvements going on at the stadium. Full Article » -
Products of Good Breeding
Monday, April 13, 2009 10:52AMI am not a dog person. A few experiences in my childhood made me quite wary of dogs in general, and for years, while I tolerated other people's dogs, I certainly never planned on owning one. Dogs are kind of incongruous with many of my personal quirks. In a bad sitcom-worthy twist, I ended up with a person who absolutely adores the creatures, further proving that whoever is calling the shots on a cosmic level has a healthy sense of humor. Ever since our relationship began and I met my fiancee's West Highland Terrier, I have found myself growing more and more attached to dogs. When her family added a Golden Doodle to the equation, my resolve was tested. It took a while, but she won me over eventually. Now, I'm a full-fledged dog fan.
Sometime in the next twelve months I'll be moving out of my apartment and into a house, and at that point, I'll probably get my first dog. With that in mind and in the hope of snagging some relationship points, my fiancee and I spent Saturday morning at the Harrisburg Kennel Club Dog Show. Full Article » -
The Farm Show’s Milkshakes Bring All The Boys to the Yard
Monday, January 12, 2009 4:05PM
I spent a good portion of my Sunday trip to the Farm Show trying to figure out how long it had been since I had been to the Farm Show. It had to have been at least 12 or 13 years, but really there's no way of knowing. All in all, it was pretty much the same as I had remembered it, except it seemed a lot more sterile. Helter Skelter in the Summer Swelter
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 11:34AM
A good weekend should be relaxing. A great weekend should be a little bit tiring—the kind of weekend that leaves you wondering how you are ever going to get up for work on Monday morning. Yes, there is something to be said for a quiet night on the couch to recharge after a rough week. Labor Day weekend isn’t about that, though. Labor Day weekend is about grabbing summer and wringing out every last drop of sun-tanned, sandals-wearing, party-going, family-uniting, outside-enjoying fun possible.
I tried my best. In four days, I hit one of my favorite restaurants in Carlisle, went to the Penn State game, watched the fireworks in Negley Park, went to a pig roast, hung out on the deck at Dockside Willies and went to Kipona. I slept well last night. Full Article » -
A Rainy Day Afternoon
Friday, August 29, 2008 1:28PM
Well, it finally rained. Other than the slight drizzle that seemed to back up traffic for no reason yesterday afternoon, I can't remember the last time we had a legitimately rainy day. That's probably not much consolation for the people who were setting up for Kipona today. To be honest, everyone I saw on Front Street this afternoon looked abjectly miserable. That's understandable — wearing a trash bag isn't the best way to start the weekend. Full Article » -
Down Goes the Patriot! Down Goes the Patriot!
Friday, August 8, 2008 2:26PM
In an upset that will surely go down as one of the greatest of our time, Commerce Bank ended years of Patriot-News dominance with a stirring victory in the 2008 United Way Trike Drags. Hyperbole? Me? Never.
The members of Team Patriot, which apparently wins every year, should have known they were in trouble as soon as they saw their t-shirts. Commerce Bank’s shirts were bright, angry red. Standing next to them in the starting gate had to be like pulling up next to a cherry-colored corvette at a stoplight and hearing it gun the engine. The Patriot? Daisy yellow. Think a teenage girl driving a Jetta with zebra-print seat covers. Full Article » -
Gene Stilp’s Ginger Spice Protest
Tuesday, August 5, 2008 1:19PM
Spice-gate continues. For those of you who aren’t aware, Monday a server and a bartender at Spice were fired after being quoted in a story by reporter Daniel Victor that appeared in the Sunday edition of the Patriot-News. Molly Turner and John Burkholder were asked whether the downturn in the economy had affected the size of their tips, and both answered candidly. When they went to work on Monday, both were informed that their services were no longer required. Early Tuesday morning (12:01am actually, burning the midnight oil eh, Nancy?) the Patriot posted a follow-up story on pennlive.com quoting both about their ouster. Full Article »
