Restaurant Round-Up: Empire Asian Bistro
Friday, January 22, 2010 11:00AM
We've got a quick and dirty little Restaurant Round-Up for you today, which is incidentally two words that can be used to describe many of the Chinese restaurants in Central Pennsylvania. Nen Q. Zhang, owner of the Jumbo Buffet in Swatara Township, recently opened Empire Asian Bistro in the building left behind by the eminently awful Ruby Tuesday's on Union Deposit Road. The goal is to create a more upscale, pan-Asian dining experience. Spotobeing Katie checked it out last Friday and here's what she had to say. Full Article » -
Restaurant Round-Up: California Café
Monday, November 23, 2009 11:30AM
When you're a kid, there are certain restaurants that just seem impossibly fancy even if they really aren't. For me, the California Café in Carlisle was one of them. My parents certainly took me out for nice dinners plenty as a child, but that was a place that they went on special occasions.
When I grew up a bit, it was a place that I began to enjoy going to myself. It was one of the places where I began to step out of my comfort zone and start ordering food that wasn't breaded and fried. I know that I went there with a group of people before at least one prom and maybe a homecoming too. I took my wife there one of the first times we went out for dinner when she visited me at my parents house. So when my family was picking a place to celebrate a pair of birthday's including my own, it was a natural choice. It's kind of an old standard for me at this point. In an odd way, it's become a source of comfort food.
If you find yourself in the Carlisle area this holiday season, the California Café is worth a look. What follows are my reflections on a recent visit there, my first in a long, long time. Full Article » -
Restaurant Round-Up: Gibraltar
Tuesday, October 6, 2009 4:01PM
In an age where everyone with a computer is a food critic—us included—universal acclaim is all but dead. Well, Gibraltar in Lancaster is as close as I've found in this area. Glowing reviews online, an impressive nod from Zagat, strong word of mouth, all of it. So when Fran asked me for suggestions for an anniversary dinner, I quickly recommended it without having been myself. I figured the next time we talked, he'd tell me about a life-changing culinary experience. Not so. Turns out he liked it, but clearly wasn't blown away. Here's what he had do say: Full Article » -
Restaurant Round-Up: Nonna’s Italian Restaurant
Tuesday, September 29, 2009 10:00AMI'm a creature of habit. What can I say? I like what I like. I'm not quick to give a restaurant a second chance if I have a bad first experience, and when I'm hungry I often go for a known commodity. Last Friday, after a stressful day, my wife and I decided to try something completely new. I don't know why. I'd never been to Nonna's (the one in New Cumberland, not the place in Harrisburg by the same name), but I called, made a reservation and ended up having a very nice meal. Details after the jump. Restaurant Round-Up: Devon Seafood Grill
Tuesday, September 15, 2009 10:27AM
When I saw that Hershey was having a Restaurant Week there was no question I was going to take advantage. Deciding which Hershey restaurant to visit was a bit more difficult, but after perusing the menus, I ended up making my first visit to Devon Seafood Grill. The Hershey location joins Devon locations in Milwaukee, Chicago and Philadelphia and is definitely a fresh take on dining in Central Pennsylvania. A full review after the jump. Full Article » -
Restaurant Round-Up: Longhorn Steakhouse
Tuesday, June 30, 2009 10:00AM
Sometimes you just want a steak. Under normal circumstances, when I get a craving for some red meat, I'd go by some and grill it myself. Well, my apartment has no outdoor space and for now, I don't own a grill. Bummer. I have yet to find a steakhouse that I really like on the West Shore — I'm open to suggestions — so when I got a steak craving the other week, my family suggested we go to Longhorn Steakhouse. I'd never been, and though I generally don't like going to chain restaurants, I had a very good meal. A good steak is a good steak, y'know? Just cook it for a minute on both sides and get out of the way. Details follow:

Restaurant Round-Up: Confit French Bistro
Tuesday, May 19, 2009 10:35AM
You can't beat eating outside. When I left work on Friday, I knew three things. I was hungry, neither myself nor my fiancee was likely to feel like cooking and I wanted to dine alfresco. That's really one of the main reasons we went to Confit in the first place, and I'm so happy that we did. My meal — the whole experience actually — was superb. Details in the Round-Up, and as always, leave comments if you agree or disagree. Full Article » -
Restaurant Round-Up: Roosevelt Tavern
Tuesday, May 12, 2009 4:19PM
When I visit my fiancee's family in York, we generally avoid the city. That's why despite visiting York periodically for the last five years, my knowledge of the place is pretty much limited to things on Route 30. But Saturday night we were celebrating a birthday and went to the Roosevelt Tavern on Penn Street. It's the subject of our latest Restaurant Round-Up, and as always, if you've been, let us all know what you think. Full Article » -
Restaurant Round-Up: Arepa City
Tuesday, April 28, 2009 4:52PMWe've decided to slightly tweak the format of Restaurant Round-Up. With so many great events coming up, the Spotobe team realized that we might want to start running more blog posts, and that those blog posts should probably be a little bit shorter. The change is going to be reflected in Restaurant Round-Up first. Instead of doing three restaurants every week, we're going to put up one-review Round-Ups on a semi-regular basis (crazy with the hyphens). We'll see how it goes. Starting things off, Dave B. submits a glowing review after a trip to one of Harrisburg's newest restaurants, Arepa City.

Restaurant Round-Up: The Hill Side Cafe and Melting Pot x II
Tuesday, March 31, 2009 3:54PM
Food is one thing that I don't mind spending money on. In my experience going out for a nice meal with friends or a loved one at a truly great restaurant is worth spending a few bucks, and it's not enjoyable if you worry about what you're going to spend the whole meal. I've done that. It's awful. I love food of all kinds, and I'm certainly not a food snob or a foodie, but sometimes you just want a nice dinner. This week in Restaurant Round-Up, Evan recounts a pleasant meal at the Hill Side Cafe in Etters — a place that I didn't even know existed — and Dori and Madeline both check in after visiting the Melting Pot on separate occasions. No one I know has ever been there and had a bad experience. Beg to differ? Agree with us? Leave us a comment. Full Article »
