Olympic Fall-Out: Why Can’t We Curl?
Monday, March 8, 2010 2:00PM
Lissa Richards is a web geek and wanna-be world traveler who currently calls Harrisburg home. She was lucky enough to travel to the Olympics in Vancouver and gracious enough to write guest posts for the Spotoblog. If you have any questions about her experience, you can find her on Twitter @LissaRich. Take it away Lissa:
Curling appears to be the sleeper hit of the 2010 Olympics. When I tell people about attending this year's Winter Games, people are more interested in hearing about the curling matches than the Russia v. Slovakia men’s ice hockey game. An offensive line with Malkin, Ovechkin and Kovalchuk—and they lost! But no, it’s all about brooms, skips and those Norwegian fancy pants. Full Article » -
Experiencing The Winter Olympics For Yourself
Tuesday, March 2, 2010 11:00AM
I love the Olympics. Love them. Winter, summer; it doesn't matter. I will watch any sport so long as a gold medal is on the line. Admittedly, I'm a bit weirded out by brother/sister ice dancing pairs, but it takes all types, right? Now that the 21st Winter Olympics are in the rear view mirror, the sports that have captivated us for the last two weeks will likely slide back into obscurity for the next four years. But they don't have to. We might not live in Vancouver or even in Minnesota, but I don't think there's any doubt that we've got plenty of winter in Central Pennsylvania.
With that in mind, I decided to hunt down the places closest to Harrisburg that you can participate in each of the sports in the Winter Olympics. Not all of them are close, most of them aren't cheap and the barrier to entry is quite high in many cases. Still, if something in the olympics particularly caught your fancy, here's where you need to go. I can't promise I've gotten the closest possible location in all cases, but I gave it a shot: Full Article » -
Lissa at the Vancouver Olympics: Bonspiels and… Chicken Hats?

I'm a fan of live sporting events. Minor league hockey, roller derby, Steelers v. Patriots — I've seen my share. Yet like so many other sports fans, it never occurred to me to join the legions of spectators at arguably the greatest live sporting event in the world: the Olympics. Good thing for me it occurred to my husband. Full Article » -
A Slightly Smaller Beautiful Game
Tuesday, February 9, 2010 10:53AM
Central Pennsylvania is generally regarded as one of the best minor league sports markets in the county. We've got plenty of teams, we support them well and they tend to be pretty damn successful. But in addition to the bigger-draw minor league sports, we also have a number of under-the-radar events that are pretty sweet. This November the American Body Building Championships will be in York, and how many areas can boast a women's football team, a roller derby team and a major sprint car track? Well, if you're looking for an affordable and slightly off-beat activity this weekend, check out the Northeast Regional Futsal Championships at the York Expo Center. Trust me, if you like soccer, hockey or sports in general, you'll dig this. Full Article » -
Out in the Cold: Civil War Museum Spending Two Weeks Outside
Friday, February 5, 2010 10:30PM
Fundraising stunts are nothing new. In fact, they've become so common that often, their impact is marginalized. Not to say that the causes they support aren't valid and worthy of donations, but it's hard to stand out amongst the crowd of people enduring, walking, running, biking, see-sawing, sleeping in a bus or twittering for donations. But the fundraiser that begins tomorrow at the National Civil War Museum is worthy of notice. No, the museum might not be trying to cure cancer or feed the hungry, but it is raising money for its education department and school outreach programs — a worthy cause. To raise money and awareness, curator Brett Kelly will be spending two weeks of his vacation time living on the grounds of the museum and emulating the life of a civil war soldier. That's not just a stunt, it's insane.
Obviously everyone knows that there's a chance we're going to get a decent amount of snow between today and tomorrow, so while you're cuddled up by the fire with a mug of coffee, imagine poor Brett up in Reservoir Park in a tent. He will be performing the duties of a typical soldier including building winter quarters and defenses. More importantly, he'll survive only on rations and with the clothing and provisions that a soldier might have had at his disposal. Full Article » -
The Harrisburg Parking Authority: Ripping You Off More Than Ever
Tuesday, February 2, 2010 1:03PM
I am one of the intrepid people that parks on City Island. In the summer, the twice-daily walk across the Walnut Street Bridge is quite pleasant. It's a peaceful way to start and end the day. During the winter, the walk is hellish. Stumbling across the Susquehanna with the northern wind making a mockery of your winter clothing makes going to work in the morning feel like a trek to a Siberian Gulag. I endue this because I refuse to pay the exorbitant rates charged by the Harrisburg Parking Authority for downtown parking. I endure it despite the fact that the parking lot on the island is in comically bad condition and has craters deep enough to swallow small children. I endure it even though my parking pass is only good when it is convenient for the parking authority — not during Harrisburg Senators' games, not during Harrisburg community events and not in case of a flood. And now, despite making absolutely no change to the services being offered, the Harrisburg Parking Authority has raised the price of parking on the island 30 percent. Full Article » -
Never Fall In Love On The Jersey Shore
Tuesday, January 26, 2010 3:48PM
So I got in the car the other day and before I could get my iPod playing, I heard a magical little promo on 99.3 KISS FM. Jersey Shore Party. West Shore Hardware Bar. I could scarcely contain my excitement. The muscled-up, liquored-up, tanned-up, fist-pumping traveling carnival that is the cast of MTV's "Jersey Shore" coming to our little corner of the world? Amazing. Unfortunately, when it comes to the Downtown After Dark Bars things aren't always as they seem, so there was a moment that I feared it was just going to be a lame theme party. As it turns out, it might as well be. There will be one cast member on hand. No, not Pauly D, not The Situation, not Snooki/Snickers/Snicks.
They booked Angelina. Ange-frickin-lina. Senorita trashbags herself. Of all of the disappointments, this is the disappointingest. Full Article » -
Christmas in Central PA: The Pennsylvania Bakery
Thursday, December 24, 2009 10:00AM
The Pennsylvania Bakery looks like something from a little ceramic village this time of year. Or like something you'd find at Disney World. Either way, it's very cool. Have a great Christmas Eve everyone. Full Article » -
Found on Craigslist York
Friday, December 4, 2009 12:30PM
It's been far, far too long. In recent months, Craigslist has really made an effort to crack down on the filthy, loopy and occasionally macabre nature of its content. It has made the site far, far more usable than it ever was before. It's also gotten rid of a lot of the awesome stuff that made "Found on Craigslist Harrisburg" so much fun. Thankfully, since the last time we did this, Spotobe has begun to cover a larger area, opening up exciting new worlds. New worlds like Lancaster. And York. Boilerplate and some White Rose weirdness to follow.
"In addition to having tons of valuable information, Craigslist has some absurd, creepy and downright filthy stuff. Their "best-of-craigslist" section has become legendary, so while I was surfing around today, I decided to collect some of the, er, more interesting posts from the York area (completely dirty ones aside) below. I have not edited any of these at all, so for the sake of my credibility, I'd like to put a preemptive [sic] out there for the rest of this post. Enjoy." Full Article » -
