  • MMC Noteworthy: Chelsea Automatic

Well, this is it. Our last Millennium Music Noteworthy of 2010 is Columbus Ohio's Chelsea Automatic. If you are one who believes that the music at a party is a major consideration that helps set the tone for whole affair, then you'll probably dig Chelsea Automatic. And if you're playing Chelsea Automatic at your party, people might not know the words to sing along, but they're definitely going to get louder, they'll definitely get rowdier and there's a chance they might just start dancing.   Full Article »

  • MMC Noteworthy: Love in October

Last year my favorite band at the Millennium Music Conference was The Slant. I knew it from the first time I sat down and tried to set up posts for the week and I've had their latest album on my iPod ever since. The Slant are not returning to the conference this year, and our next MMC Noteworthy — Love in October — is a worthy successor as visiting band that I'd most like to see. The Sweeden-by-way-of-Chicago four-piece is one of the more established bands playing the Showcases this year, and it's easy to see why.   Full Article »

  • MMC Noteworthy: Sandlot Heroes

Writing about music is hard. I'm a huge music fan, but I don't necessarily have the tools in the toolbox required to be a music critic. I might listen to a lot of the music they write about on Pitchfork, but that doesn't mean I could write for them. That takes slavish devotion and, more often than not, at least one personality disorder. The crutch of the amateur music critic is comparison. It's hard to explain what a new band sounds like; it's relatively easy to say they sound like early Spoon. Well, then writing about Allentown's Sandlot Heroes — our next Millennium Music Conference Noteworthy — shouldn't be all that difficult.   Full Article »

  • MMC Noteworthy: Kasey MacKenzie

The music you hear on the coffeehouse circuit tends to blend together into an achingly earnest lullaby. There is only so much space in your consciousness for spiky-haired guys emoting over some simple cords or young girls pouring their hearts out over the back of a piano. Have you ever listened to "The Coffee House" on XM Satellite radio for more than a half an hour at a time while doing anything other than studying? Eventually Ray Lamontagne will put you into a coma; it's unavoidable. Kasey MacKenzie — Our next MMC Noteworthy — fits snugly into the "indie-cute young girl playing sparse chords on a piano/guitar" trope, but she's got a winning voice and that's something.   Full Article »

  • MMC Noteworthy: Gold Streets

No matter how much the name might suggest it, Brooklyn-based Gold Streets is not a contemporary Christian act. Okay, we got that out of the way. First off, their lyrics aren't Christian. Secondly — and more interestingly — if you asked them, they'd probably tell you that their music doesn't sound all that contemporary. That's not a bad thing. In fact, their music has the lush, psychedelic sound that roots it in the tradition of underground 80's rock.   Full Article »

  • Millennium Music Conference Noteworthies 2010

Just like last year, in the week leading up to the Millennium Music Conference, Spotobe is going to be highlighting some showcase artists that might be worth checking out. As every year, there will be tons of bad music played in venues across Central Pennsylvania during the conference's run next Friday through Sunday. Well, bad music might be too harsh. There will undoubtedly be some bad music, but there will be plenty of music that is completely forgettable. We'll cover one artist a day every day next week, because frankly, there aren't as many worthwhile acts as there were last year. Keep in mind that when we call an act "noteworthy," we are not saying that it necessarily plays music that we like or that you will like. The bands we have chosen as our noteworthies are bands that display a level of polish above and beyond most bands playing in the showcases, and they all do something interesting within their genre.

Have a great weekend everybody   Full Article »

  • MMC Noteworthy: The Slant

I've listened to a lot of music in the process of putting together this Millennium Music Conference Noteworthy series. I'm not going to lie, a lot of it was complete crap. I was considering doing a post about 10 bands that you should avoid at the Millennium Music Conference but realized that it would be mean-spirited and completely against everything that Spotobe is supposed to be. But I heard some very enjoyable music too, and I can say without a doubt that the band that impressed me the most throughout all of this, is today's MMC Noteworthy, The Slant.

I don't know how this band hasn't gotten noticed by somebody whose job it is to notice bands. I'm not saying that their latest album Old North is a perfect product, but it's pretty damn good.

The Slant's music is a combination of folk, indie rock and psychedelia that somehow makes perfect sense. Their 2007 album Animanatamy was nice enough, but Old North is a sprawling, loose, jangly effort that should have gotten the band wider acclaim. Most of the bands at the MMC are just trying to make a name for themselves, and even some of the best acts still struggle to put together an album that makes sense as a cohesive project. The Slant has done it. Picking out a favorite song off of the album is tough because the project is so well-constructed as a whole.   Full Article »

  • This Weekend: Love is Only a Feeling

Obviously we've been getting you ready for the Millennium Music Conference for the better part of the last two weeks, and you should know by now that it kicks off tonight with shows at a few different venues. if you're into live music, there's no reason not to get your fill this weekend. • MMC Noteworthy: Lakeherst

I've tried to highlight mostly unfamiliar bands for our little Millennium Music Conference Noteworthy series, but there are a number of bands that have been mentioned in this space before that would be great bets to go see this weekend. Obviously Spotobe has nothing but love for acts like Perkasie, The Tamboureens and Nathanial Hoho and the Click Clack Boom; we just wanted to check out some new stuff. One band we have mentioned briefly before but wanted to highlight again is Philadelphia indie-rockers Lakeherst.   Full Article »

  • MMC Noteworthy: Hannah Bingman

The Millennium Music Conference offers an experience for everyone. If you're looking to go out, drink some beers and have your face rocked off you can do that. If you're looking to sip a latte and listen to some acoustic music, you can do that too. If you're looking for something in between those two experiences, you might be interested in Spotobe's next Millennium Music Conference Noteworthy, folk songstress Hannah Bingman.   Full Article »
