Check Out The Hodgepodgery
Friday, October 30, 2009 10:00AM
You hear the word "green" everywhere these days. Of course it means being responsible by recycling and not using products that harm the Earth. Even though I'm conscious about being green, I never would have guessed that there could be such an art form to recycling. Dori and I made a midday trip to The Hodegepodgery in Midtown Harrisburg late last week, and it was amazing to see how area artists have put their own unique twists on recycling. Full Article » -
Q&A: Midtown Arts Center Co-Founder John Traynor
Tuesday, August 25, 2009 1:54PM
The Midtown Arts Center is a project that is almost too good to be true. With all of the positive things happening in Midtown Harrisburg, the center has the potential to be a major catalyst for neighborhood renewal. Housed in the former Police Athletic League and Jewish Community Center on Third Street, the ambitious renovation calls for a art gallery, a 10,000 square foot theater, a restaurant, a cafe, a spa and a smaller, more intimate music venue. That venue — the Stage on Herr — opened this summer. I recently stopped by the building to talk with John Traynor, one of the three partners involved in the project. Along with Gary Bartlett and Chuck London, Traynor has rescued a gorgeous old building that had fallen well beyond the state of disrepair. Who knows where the project will go or when it will be finished, but Traynor, a true character, had some interesting thoughts on life in Midtown and the local arts scene. Here's what he had to say: Full Article » -
Hamster Heaven
Monday, August 17, 2009 10:17AM
Many ski slopes put together summer activities to keep the revenue flowing long after the snow has melted. Locally, Ski Roundtop in particular has made an effort to become a big-time destination for summer fun, and the newest addition to its Mountain Adventures area are some hellish contraptions called IGO Balls. If you've ever wandered what it would feel like to be a hamster in a ball only if that hamster was strapped in place like a fighter pilot, this is your chance. Alright, now try to get that visual out of your head. Full Article » -
Meet a Park: Boyd Big Tree Conservation Area
Tuesday, August 4, 2009 11:00AM
Central Pennsylvania is a beautiful place, and with all of the other things going on, it can be easy to overlook the nature-related entertainment available to us right here in the Midstate. Why go away if you've never explored something in your own back yard? With summer entering the home stretch, it's time for another installment of our Meet a Park series. Full Article » -
Saturday Afternoon at Hershey Gardens
Monday, July 27, 2009 9:22AM
One of the crummy things about living in an apartment is a lack of outdoor space. Saturday was a hot one, but summer is supposed to be hot, and sitting inside just wasn't an option. So Meg and I took a trip to Hershey Gardens and spent two very enjoyable hours walking the grounds. Full Article » -

Central Pennsylvania is a beautiful place, and with all of the other things going on, it can be easy to overlook the nature-related entertainment available to us right here in the Midstate. Over The Moon

There are two ways to look at any consumable commodity. Music, movies, cars, clothes, booze; you can simply view any of these as a means to an end, or you can obsess over them. Relish them. Revel in them. To me a car is a car. It gets me where I need to go. My favorite car ever was the car my parents gave me when I turned sixteen, a 1993 Honda Accord. It was safe, comfortable, easy to drive and didn't cost much to maintain. When it comes to cars, everything after that is just details to me. Clothes and wine? Now those are worth thinking about. Coffee falls somewhere in between. I like good coffee, but I know nothing about it. I'd like to learn though, which is why my first trip to Cafe di Luna on 2nd Street in Harrisburg was so great.

I Said Hey, Hey Tom
Monday, February 9, 2009 9:00AM
Part of my incredibly busy weekend was an incredibly busy Saturday night in Carlisle. Ken Mueller of WXPN had graciously hooked my fiancee and I up with tickets for the Over the Rhine concert at the Carlisle Theatre, and we ended up making a night of it, grabbing dinner at the Back Door Cafe, some coffee at Casa Mani, seeing the show and meeting some friends at Market Cross Pub. It all left me wanting to make a few recommendations for anyone not familiar with Carlisle. Full Article » -
Local and Last Minute
Friday, December 19, 2008 3:55PM
So after one last trip out to the Shoppes at Susquehanna last night, I thought my Christmas shopping was all finished. Until this morning. Apparently not. Anyway, if you're like me and still have a few pesky people to buy for, I got two email updates in the last few days that might help. I love art and I love coffee, so if any of you are still wondering what to get your friendly Spotobe editor, take note.
First of all, the ArtHouse Lounge on 2nd Street in Harrisburg is offering some huge discounts on original work from their contributing artists. Everything from leather, to glass, to paintings, to ceramics, to photography to custom framing is discounted between 10 and 20 percent. Art is intensely personal and you would have to really know someone to give it as a gift, but buying from the ArtHouse Lounge is not like giving someone a kitschy print; these are beautiful, original, one-of-a-kind pieces. Definitely worth a stop in this weekend. Full Article » -
Ski Roundtop To Open Friday
Monday, November 24, 2008 12:38PM
After last week's pleasant little snow shower that inexplicably paralyzed Central Pennsylvania, the forecasts of winter doom are coming fast and furious. Everyone seems to have their reasons for believing that this winter is going to be nasty, and you know what? Bring it. We haven't had a truly hard winter in ages, and there is something romantic and poetic about a snow-filled and bitterly cold winter.
If you disagree completely and you're looking for a silver lining, here you go: Ski Roundtop will open for the season this Friday. Sure beats shopping.
