  • This Weekend: Piano Men (and Women)

In an attempt to break the record for number of renditions of "Chopsticks" played in a four month period, the City of Lancaster, Music for Everyone and the Society of Design have teamed up to create a very cool public art project called Keys to the City. According to LancasterOnline.com, beginning on May 21st, the sidewalks of downtown Lancaster will be festooned with as many as 20 decorated pianos that passerby are welcome to sit down and play. Lancaster is a city that clearly gets it, and the collaboration necessary to make this quirky little project happen is yet another example of that. There's something especially rousing about an impromptu piano sing-along. I distinctly remember not one, but two such gatherings breaking out in the aftermath of my wedding reception, one of which took place on an almost certainly off-limits baby grand. It will be interesting to see how all of the pianos end up being decorated, and they should add some interesting flavor to First Fridays and Music Fridays in Lancaster during the warmer months. As for this weekend, here are some suggestions:

  • Olympic Fall-Out: Why Can’t We Curl?

Lissa Richards is a web geek and wanna-be world traveler who currently calls Harrisburg home. She was lucky enough to travel to the Olympics in Vancouver and gracious enough to write guest posts for the Spotoblog. If you have any questions about her experience, you can find her on Twitter @LissaRich. Take it away Lissa:

Curling appears to be the sleeper hit of the 2010 Olympics. When I tell people about attending this year's Winter Games, people are more interested in hearing about the curling matches than the Russia v. Slovakia men’s ice hockey game. An offensive line with Malkin, Ovechkin and Kovalchuk—and they lost! But no, it’s all about brooms, skips and those Norwegian fancy pants.   Full Article »

  • Everything’s Coming Up Indie

Like seemingly everything in the universe, good music comes to Central Pennsylvania in waves. For months we'll get nothing but David Allen Coe and Michael Bolton. It's horrible. But then the wave of crap crests and you can see some promising shows on the horizon. The Millennium Music Conference is behind us and March and April seem to be particularly stuffed with highly-worthwhile music, and since now is about the time you'll need to be buying tickets, I figured it might be a good idea to pull everything out into one post. So... Voila!   Full Article »

  • This Weekend: Garden Variety

Last Sunday, in need of some sign that spring was nearly upon us, I trekked down to the Farm Show Complex for the PA Garden Expo. I didn't have much in the way of expectations and the $12.50 entrance fee seemed more than a little bit salty, but in the end, I was glad I went. Some of the displays were absolutely mind-boggling, and as someone who will be redoing a back yard this summer, I got lots of inspiration and more than a few good ideas. I can't believe that some of the companies there were able to accomplish what they did in only a few short days. Fully landscaped "backyards" with massive ponds and waterfalls tumbling over multi-ton boulders, huge decks with pergolas covered in hanging plants. It definitely got me ready for summer. I'm assuming that most of the same presenters will be at the Mid-Atlantic Garden Expo taking place this week at the York Expo Center, so I probably won't go again. But if you didn't make it to the show in Harrisburg, I recommend checking the York show out. If your idea of landscaping is mowing the lawn once every week or so, here are some other suggestions for this weekend:   Full Article »

  • Experiencing The Winter Olympics For Yourself

I love the Olympics. Love them. Winter, summer; it doesn't matter. I will watch any sport so long as a gold medal is on the line. Admittedly, I'm a bit weirded out by brother/sister ice dancing pairs, but it takes all types, right? Now that the 21st Winter Olympics are in the rear view mirror, the sports that have captivated us for the last two weeks will likely slide back into obscurity for the next four years. But they don't have to. We might not live in Vancouver or even in Minnesota, but I don't think there's any doubt that we've got plenty of winter in Central Pennsylvania.

With that in mind, I decided to hunt down the places closest to Harrisburg that you can participate in each of the sports in the Winter Olympics. Not all of them are close, most of them aren't cheap and the barrier to entry is quite high in many cases. Still, if something in the olympics particularly caught your fancy, here's where you need to go. I can't promise I've gotten the closest possible location in all cases, but I gave it a shot:   Full Article »
